  • Possess a recognised TEFL or teaching qualification
  • University degree preferable

The thorough interview process, which allowed me to observe and then be observed, prepared me for what to expect in the interview and was very useful practice since I was only freshly qualified. I was given a chance and feel that I have made a considerable improvement in my teaching and knowledge of English. The experienced teachers were bursting with ideas and confidence, which was a little intimidating, and the newly qualified ones such as me were enthusiastic to learn. This mix was very helpful for working and gaining experience at the same time. But it wasn’t all work and no play. The Hallowe’en, Christmas, Easter and end of year boat party were all great fun. Students and teachers all mingling and having a good time outside of class is a very important characteristic of PARK. I think it improves learner motivation.
Besides these the school has a great stock of materials and practical experience which helps a foreign teacher. There’s always someone to help with the niggling technicalities of an alien bureaucracy (bank, tax …etc). I would recommend PARK to any teacher, newly qualified or full of experience and a bag full of extra qualifications.
I love the city’s size and friendly atmosphere. It has all you’ll need in a city of its size. Just don’t expect a humongous concert arena or a multi-destination airport and you’ll be fine. Besides Prague, Vienna and Bratislava are only a stones throw away.

I worked for PARK for 5 years, both in Prague and Brno, and I can honestly say that it is one of the most relaxed and supportive working environments I have encountered in my lengthy teaching career. There is a friendly atmosphere in the teachers' room and students seem to sense the camaraderie and are also cheerful and welcoming.

There is a youthful feeling to the school as there are several Intensives classes (young people of about 18-21) who inevitably bond with their teachers and create a real community spirit, often leading to teachers happily socializing with their students. The school also specializes in Cambridge exams and these courses are taught with a high degree of professionalism, and the students' success in exams is taken seriously by the school. So, while relaxed, a professional attitude is shown by the management and expected of the teachers. To sum up, you couldn't find a better language school in the Czech Republic, so catch it while you can!

Jo: British teacher 2007–2013

I did my CELTA in November 2007. I decided that this was a good move for me as I’d been living in Brighton for a few years (I won’t say how many, as it makes me feel old!) I felt it was time for a new challenge and a CELTA seemed like the perfect solution. It would give me the opportunity to teach and travel. I’d always had this in the back of my mind ever since I taught in Zimbabwe. I absolutely loved it and found it an immensely rewarding experience. So I set my sights on CELTA. I  took the course and after many hours of blood, sweat and not being able to eat anything but the simplest of sandwiches (initial teaching nerves, oh how fondly I remember that knot in my stomach!) I passed and picked up my knapsack and headed for a year of  PARK life in glorious Praha…

Why PARK?

Strangely enough I started thinking about teaching in Prague and PARK on New Years eve 2007 (true dedication!). I randomly bumped into an old friend who was a teacher at PARK. If I hadn’t been in that pub and we hadn’t had that pint, I wouldn’t be here writing this! The things about PARK that appealed to me as my friend chatted was how enthusiastic he sounded. He was full of praise for the school. I got an overall impression that it seemed a really supportive environment and a school that he really enjoyed being part of and teaching in. It seemed like it was a job that was a positive experience for him, not just professionally but personally too. He had developed strong friendships with the teachers he worked with. This made a big impression on me as it’s rare to have such a great combination in the workplace. I also especially liked how he talked about how the school had aided his development in his first year of teaching. He had observations with written constructive criticism and each week they had teaching workshops (C.P.D) and Czech lessons, all of  which I thought would be tremendously useful for me. Especially as I was just about to venture out into my first year of teaching! I was also intrigued by who Krystoff the crocodile was (ask!) I made it one of my (many) New Years resolutions to apply!

My experience of PARK

After applying one of the first positive experiences I had with PARK was how informative and helpful they were with the transition of moving to Prague for a year. It’s a pretty big decision to make and I appreciated how on their behalf they made it as smooth as possible for me (I on the other hand did not! I was still packing at the last minute!) I also liked how personable and entertaining they were over e-mail. It’s heartening to know that somewhere in Prague a group of teachers you’ve never met before are holding up their tea mugs toasting the fact that you’re going to work with them!

One thing I found invaluable was the information school gave me regarding accommodation. They armed me with all the relevant websites, the price range I should be looking at, and they recommended areas in Prague to look. It’s all well and good if you find an amazing flat, but an absolute pain if you discover that you’re far, far away from everything. You know you’ve made a mistake if you look out and the nearest metro or tram stop is just a speck on the horizon! It’ll also wreak havoc on your house warming party! Luckily all this was avoided and it was great to have the option of temporarily staying at school until I found a place that was suitable. Fortunately for me, my flatmate and I found somewhere quite quickly. I’d definitely recommend arriving in Prague a week or two before school starts, just to get your bearings and check out different flats. Be wary of landlords who are out to rip you off too, but again if you feel slightly dubious you can always bring in the contract to school to check that it’s all in order. It’s a real advantage to know that the school are always available and willing to help if you have any queries or problems.

I think I’ve exhausted everything that I want to say (and myself!) I really hope you have a great time being a PARKER. It’ll be grand!

Nic: British teacher 2007–2008

I did my teacher training in Barcelona, way back in 2003. Previous to this, I had a background in mainly bar work and working with teenagers with learning disabilities and some work in youth clubs. Let's not forget my years playing in a semi-professional Ska band in Norfolk, England. They're still going strong without me, good for them! I've also done a bit of travelling and it was on my travels that I kept hearing about the 'tefl' thing.

Before coming to Prague, I hadn't used my training much. I taught in a summer school in Thailand and also in the UK last summer. My last main job was actually a manager of an Irish pub in Christchurch, New Zealand! However, last year I finally decided to take the plunge into a year-long contract and was accepted as a PARKer.

The best thing about being a teacher, in general, is the diverse mix of people that you teach and inevitably work with. I've always considered myself a 'people person', so I often feel that I'm in my element.
The worst thing about being a teacher, in my humble opinion, is realising how complex the English language is and often (I'm sure this will come with experience) how difficult it can be to explain certain grammar points and their wonderful exceptions! Being a native speaker can sometimes lead you to take your own language for granted.

Being a PARKer has been a great experience, mainly due to the small, friendly atmosphere and high standard of support on both the levels of professionalism and friendship. There's always a cuppa and a laugh at hand and everyone’s been brilliant at sharing ideas.

If I could do it all again, I wish I would've brought a warmer winter coat! It definitely gets cold around these parts. In my opinion, winter isn't the best time to be a PARKer, but that's a matter of taste! Give me the sun anytime. I prefer Prague when the sun is shining!

Matt: American teacher 2004–2007

I taught at P.A.R.K. School in Prague for 3 years and it was a thoroughly wonderful experience.  I had worked for other language schools before coming to P.A.R.K., so I know what the impersonal environment of a corporate language school can be like, and P.A.R.K. is the complete opposite.  The staff works hard and succeeds at creating a family atmosphere where you are more than just another teacher; rather you are an important part of the team.

Because of the school's unique ambiance, the students also feel like they are part of the family and so the classes are warm and open, with a tangible feeling of friendliness in the air.  The small class sizes allow students to easily get to know each other and so soon after the semester begins a sense of camaraderie is developed that grows along with their knowledge of English, as they discover what kind of school P.A.R.K. is and then they too join the family.

Due to the size of the school, the office staff works closely with everyone, providing support and answering any and all questions a teacher new to the Czech Republic might have.  During my stay at the school, there was never a problem that was not quickly resolved, be it about class schedules, VISA requirements, or which dentists accepted my health insurance.

If this letter sounds a bit too enthusiastic in favor of P.A.R.K., let me assure you that it is my honest testimony; it's just that the school really is that special.  I consider myself very lucky to have found P.A.R.K ., for I truly doubt that I could have found a better school for which to work.

My time at PARK can´t easily be summed up. It was an amazing time in my life. I think it is the atmosphere at PARK that makes it special. A sense of community has been created within this small school in Roztyly. When walking through the halls and up the steps. Fun, talented and truly caring teachers conduct classes and a muted laughter can usually be heard through the classroom walls. As a teacher, you will receive the attention you need from the professional and experienced staff. As a student, you will above all have fun. The teachers here will motivate you to succeed in your language learning.
